Agumbe is located in the Thirthahalli taluka of Shimoga district placed in Malnad region in the Karnataka state of India. As heavy monsoonal rains occur here it is known as ?Cherrapunji of the south? the average annual rainfall is about 7600mm. The only permanent Rainforest research station in India is located in Agumbe. The area around Agumbe has been protected for medicinal plants conservation. The sunset point at Agumbe attracts many visitors. The setting sun is visible at a long distance from the heights of Agumbe. Kunchikal Falls the highest waterfall in India and Barkana Falls at Seta River, the 10Th. highest waterfall in India are located here. Another small waterfall in Agumbe is Onake Falls which is very near to Agumbe. Yet another waterfall Koodlu Theertha Falls is about 20 Kms from Agumbe including a 3-4 Kms of trekking. Agumbe is near Thirthalli which lies on the NH13 from Bangalore. Nearest railhead is Udipi which is on the Konkan Railway tracks. Mangalore is the nearest Airport which has some International flight connections too. By bus one can take a bus from Mangalore to Shimoga via Udipi, Hebri and Agumbe which ply at regular intervals and reaches Agumbe in about three and half hours. Agumbe and its surroundings are rich is biodiversity many new species of Flora and Fauna have been discovered here and carry the suffix agumbensis in their names. The only permanent rainforest research station in India (ARRS) Is Located in Agumbe. Famous television serial Malgudi Days written by R.K.Narayan and directed by Shankar Nag were shot in Agumbe.
