The city of Bareilly has been mentioned in many of the Bollywood songs. The popular one is the song from the movie Mera Saaya: “Jhumka Girare...Bareilly ke Bazar me”. It is one of the fastest growing cities of Uttar Pradesh.

Bareilly is the administrative headquarters of Bareilly district in Uttar Pradesh. The city lies on the banks of Ramganga River. It is one among the major metros of U.P. It has been counted equally among cities like Hissar, Patiala, Kota and Gwalior which are considered counter magnets of the National Capital region, Delhi.

It is said to be the erstwhile Panchala of the Mahabharata time. In the pre-historical period it was one of the major provinces to produce its own coins. The region was under the influence of Buddhism and Jainism.

It was founded by the Katehriya Rajput clans, was ruled by the Mughals. The region was a part of the Rohilkhand in which the Afghani Pathans were in majority. Even today, we find several Pathan clans in the city of Bareilly. These Pathans were originally from Kandahar, speaking Pashto language. After the partition of India and Pakistan, many Muslims went and settled in Pakistan.

Likewise, Hindus from Pakistan migrated to Bareilly. The city displays a blend of cultures. You can find a blend of Awadhi, Brij, Pahaari and Haryanavi culture. Pilibhit, Rampur, Udham Singh Nagar, Badaun cities are the nearby major cities. It is an educational hub comprising several research institutes and colleges. The city houses Indo-Tibetan Border Police headquarters and has a military regiment.

How to reach:

You can reach Bareilly by road and railways. Bareilly Railway Junction is a major junction in the North western railways. The city is served by six railway stations connecting cities from North east to North West.

However, if you want to travel by air route the Indira Gandhi International Airport is the nearest airport. You can reach via Pantnagar, which has direct connections to Delhi by air.
