Founded by Rao Bika, the city of Bikaner is the headquarters of Bikaner district in Rajasthan. It is the fourth largest district of Rajasthan. Earlier to the formation of Indian republic, this place was a princely state.
The city was formed in the year 1488 by Rao Bika who was the second son of Maharaja Rao Jodha. As a second heir of the Rathor Dynasty he had no chance of acquiring any ruling status, therefore he took a decision to build his own kingdom for which he acquired barren lands of Junagarh and established Bikaner. In 1474 he built a fort in the city and setup his rule there.
The city is one of the most visited places in Rajasthan. Painted havelis, frescos, camel riding, sweets, salty snacks and leisurely rides in the Thar Desert lure the tourists. Fortified by the Thar Desert, this colorful city has retained the aura of the bygone princely state.
