Champaner is a historical city in the eastern state of Gujarat, India. Champaner is situated in Panchmahal district which is about 50 Kms. Away from Vadodra. King Vanraj Chavada founded Champaner in 8Thcentury. Mahmud Begade the Sultan of Gujarat won over Champener in 14Th century. He rebuild the fort and the city naming it as Muhammadabad and shifted his capital from Ahmadabad to this place. Afterwards champaneer went through a long period of gradual decline an ruins. Later when rediscovered by the British it was only a ruined towns with no residents. Today Champaner is the world Heritage site named Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park. Karnimata Temple at the Pavagadh Hill is an important shrine where devotees visit trough out the year. Yearly fair at Karnimata temple is worth a visit. Weather is generally hot here; the best time to visit is October to February. Nearest airport is Vadodra 45 Kms. The nearest railway station is also Vadodra, by Road it is connected by Highway. The only way of getting around the town/site is by foot. Hindi film Laagan is based in a small village of this town.
