Chandigarh The city Beautiful is a union territory of India it is a common capital for the states Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh was the first planned city of India, and is known world over for its Architecture and design. It has highest per capita income in the country. After partition of India, Lahore was also handed over to Pakistan so new state capital of Panjab was required to be build. A Totally new city Chandigarh was planned and was build to present a modern look of a newly formed nation. Later when state of Haryana was created, Chandigarh being situated on the border of it was converted into a union territory and fashioned to serve as the common capital of both the states of Haryana and Punjab.
Chandigarh is situated at the foothills of Shivalik range of Himalayan Mountains in the northwestern side of India. It is surrounded by Mohali, Patiala & Roopnagar districts of Punjab as also Panchkula & Ambala districts of Haryana. It has a humid subtropical type of climate where temperature ranges from -1 degrees in winter to almost 41 degrees in summers at times. The rainfall is uncertain and occurs sometimes in winters also, Total rainfall being about 1100 mm annually. Chandigarh is densely covered Eucalyptus and Banyan trees besides Asoka, Mulberry,Cassia and many other varities of trees are also seen in abundance in the neighboring forests which is the home to many animals and plants variety. Animals like sambars, Deers, barking Deers, Woodpeckers, Peacocks and Parrots are easily spotted in these sheltered forests. Sukhna Lake has a range of geese and ducks, Migrant birds from Japan and Siberia visit this lake during winters. Chandigarh city hosts a bird sanctuary by the name Parrot Sanctuary which has selection of many birds variety. Chandigarh ranks first in vehicle population, it has wide roads and ample parking space hence using private vehicles for local conveyance is easy here.
Chandigarh is nicely connected by roads to all other cities by two national highways crossing it. It also has a good railway and air links with other cities of the nation. A metro rail is under plan for Chandigarh.
