Cuttack, Orissa Travel Guide

Cuttack is a city of Indian state of Orissa. Earlier it was the place of capital of the state. Its origin dates back to 989 AD when it was established. Since then it had been the seat of government of the state of Orissa till 1948. Due to its growing endless size; new capital was created at Bhubaneswar just 20km from the city of Cuttack. Cuttack is popular for its woven textile, silver filigree works and the festivals of Dussehra and Diwali when the people of Cuttack adorn the goddess with large amount of silver and gold. The city is regarded as the cultural capital of the state. It is also called the twin city of Bhubaneswar.

 

How to reach: Rail and road connect it to other parts of the state and the country. National highway (NH-5) goes through the city of Cuttack. Many state run buses and other privates vehicles connect it to other cities and towns of the state. It has its railway station which is well linked by many trains to other cities and towns of the state and the country. Biju Patnaik Airport at Bhubaneswar is nearest airport to it. It is just 28 km away and well connected by several flights to other major cities of the country.

 

Places of interest: Cuttack houses many places of attraction in and around it. Chandi Temple of Cuttack is a holy place. It is believed to be the abode or presiding deity of the city. Singanatha Temple is another place of worship near the city. The temple is located near Mahanadi River in calm ambience and it is oldest temple in Cuttack. Barabati fort is remnants of glorious history of Cuttack. The fort is built in 11th century and renovated in 14th century. The fort is must visit place and situated on the bank of Mahanadi River. Stone Revetment near Cuttack is the fine example of ancient engineering skills. It is built by Keshari Kings on the bank of Kathjuri River. It also protects the city from the seasonal floods. Spread over an area of 650 sq km, Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary is the only sanctuary in Asia which houses estuarine crocodiles. Besides, it is home to rich marine vegetation, varieties of trees, creeks, rivers backwater etc. Dhabaleshawar temple near Cuttack is one of holiest pilgrimage center in the state of Orissa. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is visited throughout the year by thousands of devotees across the state. Quadam-i-Rasool is another place of worship in Cuttack. It is a shrine built buy a Hindu king in 18th century for the Muslims. The shrine is revered place for both Muslims and Hindus. It is spread on whopping 57 acres and has the blend of Hindu and Muslim architecture.

 

Other details: Festival of Durga Pooja is the most popular regional festival of Cuttack. The festival is held during the October-November and is dedicated to Goddess Durga.
