Dharamshala formally known as Bhagsu is a winter capital Hlmachal Pradesh government. It is the district headquarters of Kangra district. The current Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso lives in Mcleod Ganj a village near dharamshala. Dharamshala is a town located in the higher kangra valley, a dense coniferous forest consisting of mainly Deodar trees surrounds the town. The town is situated at an altitude of about 1450 meters (4800 feet).
The city is divided into two divisions; one division is market area or business and administrative section known as Dharamshala. The second part is McLeod Ganj which is separated from Dharamshala by a village Ganchen Kyishong which is the home to Tibetan Government in Exile. The climate is generally cool through the year. The temperature in June ranges from 30 degrees in the day time to 23 during nights. In December, during winter time the temperature lies between 16 to 7 degrees in a day. Up to 300 mm rainfall is received here annually.

Nearest airport is gaggal airportEnjoy trekking from Dharamshala to Dhauladhar or Ravi Valley and even up to Chamba District. Enroute you can appreciate pine and oak forests, streams and rivers see waterfalls and glacier also. A rock climbing adventure can also be undertaken here. Most famous places of tourist interests are Ellora style rock cut Masrur temples.
