Durg is the third largest city of Chhattisgarh after Raipur and Bilaspur. It falls on the main railway line of south Eastern Central Railways, Nagpur division (midway between Kolkata and Mumbai). National Highway No.6 (NH6) Mumbai-Nagpur-Kolkata highway (290 Kms from Nagpur) passes through Durg. Nearest Airport is Raipur (60 Kms,). Durg gained its importance because of the big Steel Plant at Bhilai; otherwise Durg is an Agricultural market and has rice milling mills. Other industries are Brass and Bell Metal castings / workings, Oil pressing, mining and weaving. Durg is rich in culture; it has its own dance styles, cuisine and Music. Teejan Bai a folk artist known the world over for her unique style of singing the Mahabharata Epic, known as Phandwani, is from this place. Dance style known as Raut Nacha originated here. Other famous dance styles are Panthi and Soowa dance.
