The city was a part of Kongu Kingdom which is why it is still known as a part of Kongu region of Tamil Nadu. The region was under the rule of Pandyas, Cholas, Delhi Sultanate and the Vijayanagara Empire. The city was a part of Coimbatore district up until 1979. It became an independent district in 1979.
