Haldwani, Uttarakhand Travel Guide

Known as the ‘Gateway of Kumaon’ region, the city of Haldwani is an important city in the state of Uttarakhand. The city is situated in the Nainital District of Uttarakhand.

Haldwani is known along the Kathgodam city and together they are a part of one Municipal Corporation called Haldwani-Kathgodam Municipal Corporation. The city was named Haldwani in the year 1834 by the British.

The city was the winter headquarters for the British. It was a part of Kumaon district which later became Almora district. Later, a separate Nainital district was formed in 1891 and Haldwani was added to the district.

The region is situated in the Bhabhar region of Uttarakhand which is best known as a trade hub connecting the Kumaon and Indo Gangetic plain. Bhabhar region is the place where the Indo Gangetic Rivers go underground and re-emerge in the Indo Gangetic planes.

Now, the city of Haldwani is an urban area consisting of people hailing from all parts of the country. It has become an Educational hub for many aspiring students. It is the center for Uttarakhand Open University.
