Known as the Golden city, the city of Jaisalmer is located in Rajasthan. The city is named after Raja Jaisal, a Rajput King. The city is situated in the famous Thar Desert, and it houses many beautiful and artistic palaces, forts, and several Jain temples. Yellow sand gives the golden look to the city and its surrounding area.

The city is situated near the border of India and Pakistan in the western part of Rajasthan. It was situated on the Indo-Pak trade route, but, over a period of time lost its strategic importance. However, this desert city is one of the main tourist destinations of Rajasthan.

Its temperature ranges from 25 to 41 in summer and from 8 to 23 in winter. The economy of the city is mainly dependent on tourism.

Built in 1156 by Bhati Rajput ruler Jaisal, the Jaisalmer Fort is situated on Trikuta Hill and is one of main attractions.

Patwon ki Haveli, Salam Singh Ki Haveli, Nathamalji Ki Haveli are some of the havelis worth visiting in Jaisalmer. The city is also adorned with many beautiful Jain temples mainly dedicated to 16th Tirthankara Shanntinath and 23rd Tirthankara Parshava. Excavated in 1367 by Rawal Gadsi Singh, Gadsisar Lake is a scenic Rain water lake with small temples and shrines surrounding it. There are many museums worth visiting in Jaisalmer. Desert Culture Museum and Center, Jaisalmer Folklore, Museum and Government Museum are some of them.

Jaisalmer also boasts of having some of the oldest libraries in India containing rare artifacts of Jain tradition etc. Jaisalmer also has other places of attraction around it. Bada Baugh, Amar Sagar, Mool Sagar, Desert National Park and Lodhruva are some of them. 

Beautifully carved wooden boxes, brassware, blankets, ethnic silver jewelry, leather bags, hand embroidered slippers are some of the most preferred items of visitors in Jaisalmer. Festival of desert, most popular festival of Jaisalmer, is celebrated over three days and it usually comes in the months of January and February. The festival is attended by many tourists not only from India but from other parts of the world also.

The city is well connected to Jodhpur, Bikaner and Jaipur by road. Train connection is from Old Delhi. Jodhpur is the nearest domestic airport. Cabs are available from Jodhpur, Bikaner and Jaipur. Approximate distance to other cities: Jodhpur -285 km, Jaipur -570km, Bikaner -330 km.
