Karauli is a town of Indian state of Rajasthan. It is the administrative head quarter of the Karauli district. The city was established in 1348 AD and formerly known as Kalyanpuri after the name of local deity Kalyanji. Karauli houses as many as 300 temples in and around it and therefore is one of most sacred pilgrimage center in the state of Rajasthan. It is also famous for many historical monuments. Completed in 1930, Bhanvar Niwas Palace is the main tourist attraction of Karauli. The palace was residence of Maharaja Ganesh Pal of Karauli. The palace was built as per the direction of Ganesh Pal and one can easily notice his liking for colonial style exterior and Rajasthani traditional interior designs. City Palace is another interesting place of Karauli and one of the major tourist attractions of the city. This old palace is an important historic monument and known for its beautiful classical paintings, stone carvings, architecture and lattice works. The palace is must visit place and its beauty makes the visitors spellbound. Timangarh Fort is yet another historic place to visit. The fort was built in 1100 AD and later on it was destroyed in the attack and then again it was rebuilt in 1244 AD by King Timan Pal of Bayana. The fort houses the many stone carved idols and is known for amazing art works made on the yards and walls. Karauli has many temples worth visiting in and around it. Kalika Devi temple is one of them and it is situated about 30 km away from the Karauli. The temple attracts many pilgrims every year. An annual fair lasting for two weeks is also organized every year. Kalyanji Temple and Madan Mohanji Temple are other temples of religious significance in Karauli.
