Karwar, Karnataka Travel Guide

Karwar located in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka state in India, it is the district headquarters of the place. Situated on the seaside it has the river Kali flowing through it. Natives of the nearby villages call Karver as Kone meaning corner of landmass before river river Kali. The town is located between Arabian Sea and Western Ghats it is rich in Flora and Fauna. In ancient times Karwar was a trade center where Arabs, Dutch, Portuguese, British and French traders visited for trading Muslin, Pepper, cardamom, cassier and coarse Blue Cotton cloth. Fisheries are the main industry in the town. In rural area Agriculture is the main occupation in Karwar. Other major occupation is Animal husbandry, Sericulture, Beekeeping and Leather Works. Kaiga Nuclear plant is located about 50 Kms from Karwar. As a part of Project Seabird Indian Navy has established INS Kadamba as a new naval base. Two famous beaches Casurina Beach and Arga Beach has been utilized by the Navy for its infrastructure set ups and are out of bounds for general public. However during Naval week in December it is thrown open for the visitors. Sea foods cashews and coconuts are famous of Karwar. Ganesh festivals, Diwali, Idd and Christmas are celebrated in Karwar.

Karwar is connected with rest of India by Railways. Karwar is only 13 Kms from Goan border at Polem and 1 Hour by train from madgaon. Mumbai by Konkan track railway is 12 hours journey. Also it is 12 hours away from Bangalore by road journey. Climate in Karwar is hot in summers with temperatures ranging from 34 degrees in summers to 22 degrees in winters. Average annual rainfall is about 4000mm annually.  Hindi feature film Golmaal Returns was partly shot at Karwar port.
