Situated on the banks of Panchganga River Kolhapur lies in the southern corner of western Maharashtra, India. A much sacred Temple of goddess Mahalaxhmi is situated in Kolhapur. The main language spoken here is Marathi. It is elevated about 570 meters from the sea level hence the climate here is cool. The temperature here ranges from 10degrees in winters to about 35degrees in summers. Rainfall is usually heavy here.

It is said that Marathi films originated from Kolhapur. Industrially Kolhapur has an MIDC industrial belt. There are many foundries in the town and they are famous the world over for their accuracy and finish. Kolhapur is connected to major destinations in India through Air Rail and Road Transports.
