Kozhikode is also known as Calicut. The city lies on the western coast of India in the state of Kerala. Vasco Da Gama landed in 1498 at a village called Kappad (18 km) near Kozhikode.

After the Portuguese, the Dutch came, and then followed by the British and the French. It was the capital city of the Zamorin sultans. The city has been mentioned as one of the important port cities of India in the traveler’s accounts of Chinese and Persian explorers.
The city is a Municipal Corporation and a Lok sabha Constituency. The port of the city is inactive; however, the Beypore port near the city is a bit active.
