Kozhikode, Kerala Travel Guide

Kozhikode is also known as Calicut. The city lies on the western coast of India in the state of Kerala. So, now you know, this was that coastal city where the Portuguese traveler Vasco Da Gama landed first. This was the city that opened the gate of trade and commerce to the Europeans. Vasco Da Gama landed in 1498 at a village called Kappad (18 km) near Kozhikode.

The Arab Muslim merchants were the local people who traded with the Portuguese during the rule of the Zamorins of Kerala. The city was best known for spice trade. After the Portuguese, the Dutch came, and then followed by the British and the French. It was the capital city of the Zamorin sultans. The city has been mentioned as one of the important port cities of India in the traveler’s accounts of Chinese and Persian explorers.

The city is a Municipal Corporation and a Lok sabha Constituency. The port of the city is inactive; however, the Beypore port near the city is a bit active. It is slowly growing in terms of industrial growth. Popular news papers such as, Mathrubhumi were launched in this city. The Calicut University is on the outskirts of the city at about 24 km from the heart of the city.

How to reach:

It is a semi-urban city with good connectivity. Both private and public transport systems are active in the city. It is well connected to Mumbai via Mangalore. NH-17 connects with Kochi, Kannur, Guruvayur, Mumbai, and Goa. Kozhikode is well connected to Mysore, Ooty and Bangalore.

The city has a railway station connecting Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Palakkad, Coimbatore, Chennai, Bangalore, Mangalore, Mumbai and also New Delhi by trains. It is served by an International Airport, at 26 km away from the main city. Flights to the Gulf countries are available from here. Travel around in local city buses, rickshaws, and taxis.
