Kumbakonam Taluka is situated in Thanjavur district of southern state of Tamil Nadu in India. It lies 40 Kms. From Thanjavur and 275 Kms. from Chennai. The town is sandwiched between two rivers Kaveri River flows to the North of the town and Arasalar River is to its Southern part. The town was at its best during the British period when it was known for its European education along with Hindu culture. It was then known as ?The Cambridge of South India ?. Now Kumbakonam has an elected Municipality with 45 wards which makes it the second largest Municipality in Thanjavur district. Because many temples are there in the town Kumbakonam is also known as the temple town there are about 188 temples in Kumbakonam town and about a few thousand more around the town. Economy of Kumbakonam is based on products made of Brass, Copper, Bronze, Lead vessels Silk and cotton clothes, Sugar, Rice, Indigo and Pottery. Rice mills are a major revenue producer of the town 30% of the industries based in Kumbakonam are rice mills. Betel leaves and betel nuts are very famous here. Betel nuts produced here are graded as one of the finest in the world. Kumbakonam is well connected by roads and railways to all the cities of the state and the Nation. The nearest International Airport is Tiruchirapalli (100 Kms.) and nearest seaport is Nagapattinam (50 Kms.)
