Nagapattinam district is a sea port of importance on the east coast of India in Tamil Nadu state. It is a major commercial center since olden days, fishing and sea trade is the major financial occupation of the town. The town also attracts many pilgrims to its pilgrim sites they are Singaravelan Temple, Nagore Dargah, Puhar and Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health. Velankanni the very famous pilgrim center for Christians in India is only 16 Kms from Nagapatitnam. Nagapattinam lies 350 Kms south to the state capital Chennai. The town of Karaikal lies 20 Kms to its North. Thanjavur is 90 Kms and Tiruchirappalli is 145 Kms west of Nagipattinam. Fishing along with agriculture is the main occupation of the city. There are many Ice factories and food processing industries in the town. The fishing industry was very badly affected by the Tsunami cyclone of the Indian Ocean in 2004.
