Nainital gets its name from the Naini Lake located in the Kumaon foothills. The city is built upon the slopes of Kumaon Hills surrounding the lake. It was rebuilt after a tragic landslide that occurred in 1880. It is the administrative headquarters of Nainital district in Uttarakhand.
