Nizamabad is a town (district headquarters) in the Nizamabad district of Andhra Pradesh. It is situated at a distance of 161 km (to the North) from Hyderabad ?the State capital. Earlier during the Rashtrakuta rule the city was known as Indrapuri (also known as Induru) and later in the reign of the Nizams it was renamed as Nizamabad. The city is situated on the railway line connecting Hyderabad and Mumbai. It is situated in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. The city is being irrigated by the Nizam Sagar dam on the River Manjeera. Recently the region was granted to set up a University named the Telangana University. You can reach Nizamabad via Hyderabad by air route. Hyderabad is the nearest airport for the city. However the city is well connected by road and railways. Trains running from Hyderabad to Mumbai halt at Nizamabad. It comes under the Kachiguda-Manmad section connecting all the major cities from both ?the north and the south sides. It is well connected via NH-7 and NH-16. NH-7 is the longest national highway in India connecting Varanasi to Kanyakumari. Places to see: Nizamabad has many sightseeing points such as Nizam Sagar dam, Ashok Sagar, Ali Sagar, Nizamabad fort, Quilla Ramalayam, and Mallaram forest. The Nizam Sagar dam is built on the river Manjeera. Nizamabad Fort hosts a Ram temple on the topmost point. It is an ancient temple. The fort was built by the Rashtrakuta rulers and the Ram temple was built due to the initiation taken by Swami Samarth Ram das, the Guru of Chathrapathi Shivaji. Mallaram forest is a nearby (7 km) forest area. Ali Sagar is a reservoir and it is a perfect picnic spot. It has a garden and one can go for boating in the Ali Sagar reservoir. There is an archeological museum in the city consisting of antique sculptures and other articles.
