Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh Travel Guide

Omkareshwar is the place hosting one among the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. The city lies on the banks of the River Narmada in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. It has been formed into an island resembling the ?OM? (Hindu symbol) shape. The island is known as the Mandhata Island. It lies at the confluence of the River Narmada and the river Kaveri. There are two shrines actually; one is the Omkareshwar and the other one is the Amareshwar. Omkareshwar is often referred with the stories culled from the Puranas. One of them is the story related to the Sage Agasthya. The other one is about the sage Mandhata. Usually, devotees take a ?parikrama? of the Omkareshwar temple as a part of the ritual. The ?parikrama? consists of walking around the temple. The confluence of two rivers is another attraction of the city. River Narmada is a much revered river by the Hindus and meets with River Kaveri here. That forms into a shape of the ?Om? symbol. It is a beautiful location. Apart from these two there are three more places of interest: Sri Govinda Bhagavtpada Cave (he was the great Guru of Adi Shankara), Kedareswar temple and the Omkar Mandhata temple. You can reach the place via Indore by air which is the nearest airport for Omkareshwar. Indore lies at a distance of 77 km from Omkareshwar. Omkareshwar Road station is the nearest railhead. But, the station is not well connected to other cities. So, it is better if you travel till Indore by train and hire a taxi from Indore. But there are frequent buses to the place from Indore. Buses ply from Khandwa which is 60 km away, and also from Ujjain (133 km).
