Paonta Sahib lies in the southern part of Sirmour district on National highway No. 72 connecting Chandigarh and Dehradun. It is 132 kms away from Chandigarh, and 180 Kms from Shimla. Nearest railway station is Dehradun which is 45 Kms away. Nearest airport is Jolly Grants airport at dehradun (70 Kms away). Ponta Sahib is connected to nearby towns by regular bus services. The economy of the town depends on the recent openings of industrial companies like CCI Cement factory, Pharmaceutical units as Ranbaxy, Mankind Pharma, Malwa Cotton and Textiles and other industrial houses. The city is famous for a Big Gurudwara, Gurudwara Ponta Sahib which lies on the banks of River Narmada which is the boundary between the state of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarkhand. It is said that the tenth Sikh Guru Guru Gobind Singhji stayed here as his horse on his own decided to stop here. Gobind Singhji wrote many Sikh religious books here and later moving out to Anandpur Sahib established Khalsa Panth. A museum in Ponta Sahib houses many weapons and articles used by Guru Gobind Singhji. The weather in Ponta Sahib is extremes sometimes and could be said to be unreliable. The temperature varies between 0?entigrade to 40?entigrades. Frost may occur in winter, due to western disturbances it may rain in winter. There are many Gurudwaras in the town. Mata Renuka Temple is a site for Hindu pilgrimage. Mata Renuka Lake is having a shape of a woman. A legend says that the woman in shape of lake is the mother of lord Parshuram ji, Parshuram being a submissive son, once his father Rishi Jamadagni ordered him to cut the head of his own mother, Parshuram obeyed accordingly. Seeing the obedience the father asked for a boon and requested him to restore the head back and bring back her to life. The Renuka Mata Lake is in a shape of woman?s figure and is supposed to be very deep. Another Temple of Mata La Devi in Rajban is very famous and lots of devotees visit this temple during Navratra festival.
