Earlier known as Prabhavatinagar, Parbhani is a city in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is the headquarter of the district of the same name. It falls in Marathwada region of the state. The region has eight districts including the Parbhani itself. One of the four agricultural universities of the state is situated in Parbhani. The city is located approximately in the center of the state. Parbhani district including the entire Marathwada region was earlier under the rule of Nizam of Hyderabad. Many saints have been related to this district one or other way and hence Parbhani is also known as the land of saints. The district is also the birth place of famous mathematician Bhaskarbhat. Selu near the Parbhani was the place of Sree Babasaheb Maharaj’s living. He was the guru of Sir Sai Baba. Sai Baba also spent some year here with his guru. The river of Godavari also flows through the district of Parbhani and there are many important temples located on the banks of this river. Temple of Mudgaleshwar at Mudgal is one of them. The temple is believed to be built nine hundred year ago. It is situated in the middle of the river. During the season of monsoon the temple gets covered completely with the water. Hence it is best visited during summer time of April to June. You can also visit the temple of Pardeshwar. It is situated in the city. The temple is dedicated to the Lord Shiva and has Shivlinga made of mercury. Mercury means Para in Marathi language and hence it is believed that the temple has derived its name from that. Nemagiri is another religious place to be seen near Parbhani. The place is holy one for the Jains. A idol of Bhagavan Parshwanath is situated there. This beautiful idol is made in black stone and is 6 feet high. Shelgaon is another religious place situated in Parbhani district. It is in Sonpeth Tahsil of the district. There is temple of lord Vishnu situated in Shelgaon. It is visited by many pilgrims from across the state. Parbhani is well linked by rail and road to other places of the state and the country. Parbhani railway station has connection to Aurangabad, Mumbai Pune, Hyderabad and other cities and towns of the state and the country. You can also get here by state run buses and other private vehicles as these mode of transportation are available from many other cities and towns of the state. Nanded Airport serves as the nearest airbase to Parbhani. The airport is just 60 km from it and is connected to Mumbai by some intermittent flights.
