Rajahmundry is a Municipal Corporation in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. The city lies in the coastal region of Andhra on the eastern side of the state. It is situated on the banks of the River Godavari.
As the history of the region tells, the whole area comprising East and West Godavari districts was a part of the Godavari district that got separated from the Rajahmundry district in 1859. The Rajahmundry district was formed in 1823, and it was divided into Godavari and Krishna districts and then in 1925, the Godavari district was divided into East and West Godavari.
Rajahmundry city is a popular city in the East Godavari district. It is called the cultural capital of the state for being the birth place of the first Telugu poet Nannayya. It was the place where the Telugu blocked was formed. The city takes pride in hosting Vedic study centers.
As the stories say, the city was founded by Raja Narendra around 10th century AD. It was the place where the Telugu language took a formal shape by evolving its own blockeds, and grammar. The contribution of poet Nannayya and his associates should be acknowledged in this regard.
The city is said to have been the center of nationalist activities during the British colonial period. The Dutch had constructed a fort in Rajahmundry which was converted into a jail by the British. The first film studio of Andhra Pradesh, the Durga Cine Tone was set up in Rajahmundry. There is a bank (Andhra Bank) in the place of the studio now.
Rajahmundry is gearing up to modern amenities. Now, you would find malls and multiplexes here. But, agriculture has been the main occupation to found in the surroundings. Paddy and sugarcane are mainly grown.
