Rajnandgaon is a city in the Rajnandgaon district of the Chhattisgarh State. According to the 2001 census the city consists of around 143, 727 population. The city was formed in the year 1973. The city has a beautiful landscape consisting of lakes, ponds and rivers. The city is mainly calm and quiet with a picturesque background. Only recently some industries have been set up on small-scale basis. You can reach Rajnandgaon via Raipur (Mana, at 80 kms of distance)) which is the nearest airport. NH-6 passes through the city. The city had seen the glory of many rulers in the past including the Somavanshis, Kalchuri rulers and also the Marathas. At a point of time the city was ruled by some local chieftains like the Mahants. Two prominent Hindi writers hail from this city: Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh and Padum lal Bakshi. Rajnandgaon is a developing city. Small-scale industries have shoot up recently and the city hosts good many educational institutions. The only institution of its kind offering courses in music and fine arts (Indira sangeeth and Kalavishwavidyalaya) is in Khairagarh (a tehsil) of this city. Places of interest: The temple of Bamleshwari Devi situated in the Dongargarh tehsil is the main attraction of Rajnandgaon. The temple would be crowded during the Navratra festival. Other than that there is another ancient temple of Mata Sheetala devi (Shakti Peetha). Rajnandgaon hosts ?folk? festivals like Bull Race (Pola) and Mohara mela.
