Satara, Maharashtra Travel Guide

Satara is a city in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is main place of Satara District. It is situated at the attitude of 2320 feet and house many tourist spots in and around it. Satara was the capital place of Maratha Empire in 17th century and therefore it is one of historic cities of the state. The city got its name from the seven hills that surround it. The word ‘Sat’ in the name of ‘’Satara’’ means seven and while Tara (in Satara) means hill. Thus ‘’Satara’’ means seven hills which are found around the city of Satara. Old temple of Koteshwar is famous in Satara. It is the temple of Lord Shiva. It was built in 16th century and is just 16 km away from the center of the city. The temple is visited by many devotes on the occasion of Maha Shivratri. You can also visit Kas Lake near Satara. The lake is situated about 23 km from the city and has beautiful natural surroundings. The entire road from city to the lake is pleasant delight for the travelers as it is nestled with bounty of beautiful nature. While travelling to the lake area from the city one can see picturesque hill terrains, lush green forest and fascinating valleys. Kas Plateau is another interesting place near Satara you can take some time out to visit. It is even sometimes called as the valley of flowers as various species of beautiful flowers are found in plenty there. Chandkoli National Park, Koyana Dam and Koyana Wildlife Sanctuary are recently declared as a part of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve.

Satara also has fascinating waterfalls situated around it. Vajrai waterfall and Thoseghar Waterfall are some of them. Ajinkyatara Fort and Sajjangarh Fort are some of the historic monuments to be seen near Satara. Charbhinti, Natraj Mandir, Kuraneshwar, Bamnoli, Sangam Mahuli and Bhairoba Hill are some of other places of tourist attraction and religious significance in and around the city of Satara. Rail and road connect the city of Satara to other parts of the state and the country. Satara railway station is well linked to Pune, Mumbai and other cities and towns of the state and the country. Pune serves as the nearest airbase to Satara. The airport is about 110 km from it and is well linked to other major cities of the country. Many state run buses and other private vehicles are also available from Pune Mumbai, Baramati, Chiplun, Mahabaleshwar and other cities and towns of the state and the country.
