Shekhawati is a typical Rajasthani township situated in the desert region of Rajasthan. It lies in the Northern part of the State. Shekhawati means ?the Garden of Shekha? named after the local ruler. The place is known for palaces, havelis, and forts. Marwari people and the Jat-Rajputs are in majority there. Summers become very hot due to the desert ambience. Shekhawati Rajputs built the full pledged city around later half of the 18th century and ruled over the region till the British rule. Their kingdom was loyal to the rulers of Jaipur, to the Kachwaha Rajputs. They have built more than 50 forts in different ?thikanas? (branches or blocks)) belonging to them. Today the city has become a tourist spot with good accommodation facilities. Most of the former forts and havelis have been converted into hotels. Shekhawati architecture is famous for decorative mural paintings (fresco). Stories of Rama and Krishna have been depicted through the murals in some havelis. Some havelis depict gods and goddesses from the myths. The most decorative cluster of havelis among them is the Nawalgarh built in 1836. Some of the popular cities inside the Shekhawati cluster are Dundlod, Mukundgrah, Mandwa, Nawalgarh, Fatehpur and Churu. You would be traversing through forts, havelis, zenanas and palaces. The rich heritage of the royal life comes alive through the decorative mural paintings and family paintings. Jaipur is the nearest point to reach Shekhawati by air. Shekhawati is about 150 km from Jaipur. You can even hire taxis from Delhi (250 km). Shekhawati is well connected by road transport. Jhunjhunu is the nearest point to reach by rail.
