Sriperumbudur is a city in the Kanchipuram district of the Tamil Nadu State. It is on the Chennai-Bangalore highway. The place is known as the birthplace of Sri Ramanuja (propagator of Vaishnavism). The name of the city became famous after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi (former Prime Minister of India) that took place in 1991. The city is just about 30 km from Chennai. It is well connected by road. Chennai happens to be the nearest airport. Tirupathi is about 104 km from this city. The city can be reached via two railway stations which are nearby. One is at Vandalur and the other one is at Trivellore. It is a growing industrial city now. The area comes under the special Economic Zone (SEZ). Many industries including Hyundai, Ford, Nokia, Hindustan Motors, BMW, Nissan and Saint-Gobain have set up their operational sectors here. Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who had come for addressing an election rally had been assassinated by a human bomb in 1991. Rajiv Gandhi along with many other supporters had died at the spot. Entire India was in shock by this incident. The assassins have been identified and are facing the trial now. A memorial has been built on the site.
