About the city: Tiruchirappalli also known as Trichy and Tiruchi is a central district of Tamil Nadu. It is the fourth largest municipal corporation of TN. It is a very old city ruled by many dynasties like early Cholas, Pandays and Pallavas, later Cholas and Pandyas, Delhi Sultanaet, Vijayanagar empire, Nayak Dynasty and British empire at different eras. Now it is a major education and industrial center in TN. Big industries like BHEL. Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project, Golden Rock Railway Workshops are situated in Trichy. National Institute of Technology, IIM, Bharathidasan University and Anna University of Technology have their campuses in Trichy. The city can be divided into three parts with Cantonment in the south, Markets in the center and the temples in the Northern part of the city. The city is entirely encircled by farm fields. Farm animals are found in big numbers. The climate is very hot during summer days but evenings are cool. It is best during November to February period. The drinking water to the city is supplied from the Cauvery River and about 1500 bore wells which are linked to 60 service reservoirs in the city. The city is located in the middle of TN State on the National Highway No. NH45. The financial system of Tiruchirappalli is largely manufacturing. Throughout British ruling, the city was well known for its leather tanneries, Cigar manufacturing units and Oil Presses. Over 12 million cigars were manufactured and exported yearly. Tanned hides and skins were exported to United Kingdom. There are many retail and wholesale markets in Trichi, the main market is 128 years old Gandhi Market, which is the biggest vegetables market of the entire region. Another Flower market in Srirangam and Mango market in Mambazha Salai are famous. Tiruchirappalli is a chief engineering equipment manufacturing center in TN. The Golden Rock Locomotive Workshops was shifted here from Nagapattinam in 1928is a big locomotive manufacturing unit in TN and manufactures about 700 container wagons annually. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited a largest public sector engineering company is situated in Trichi. Tiruchirappalli is connected with rest of the country by rail, road and air. National highways NH45, NH45B, NH210, NH67, and NH210 pass through the city and hence good road connectivity is there to all other towns. It is a separate division of southern railways and has very good rail connectivity to rest of the country. It is the second busiest Airport of Tamil Nadu. Trichy has flights to Chennai, Trivandrum. International flights are available to Abu Dhabi, Colombo, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
