Tirunelveli is located on the banks of the River Thamirabarani in Tamil Nadu. The city is the administrative headquarters of the Tirunelvili district. It is located almost near to Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Toothukkudi and Tuticorn.
Name of the city had undergone many changes since the 7th century. It was known as Teveram, Venuvana, and then was renamed as Thenapandiyanadu by the Pandya rulers. Later the Nayakas again renamed as Tirunelveli Seemail. The British retained the name Tirunelveli and it is known by that name now.
It was the second capital of Pandya rulers after Madurai. In the 17th century the Nawabs of Arcot managed to occupy the region. However the local chieftains known as Nayaks had retained the power and they resisted the British occupation later. Two Polygar wars have been fought against the British.
The city is divided into two parts by the Tamirabarani River. One part is the Tirunelveli area and the other is known as Palaymkottai area. Both areas are connected by an over bridge. The city of Tirunelveli is situated at the end of the Deccan Plateau. Due to scanty rains the geographical area of the city looks like a desert region. Yet, due to the presence of a river the surrounding area is irrigated and thus people can grow crops.
Tirunelveli was under the influence of Christian missionaries. We can see large number of converted Christians here. Wind mills and agriculture are the main revenue yielding sectors of the city’s economy.
